Overview
More than one billion people around the world live in slums and this figure is rising as towns and cities continue to expand. The 2nd Asia-Pacific Housing Forum will examine concrete solutions for housing the urban poor. It will look at alternative approaches for housing the urban poor. It will look at alternative approaches and scalable models involving governement authorities, businesses and social organizations that build on each other's strengths to provide urban housing solutions. the forum will provide a venue where major stakeholders in relief and development can explore strategies to bridge the gaps between emergency.
APHF 2009 also builds on the results of the 1st Asia Pacific Housing Forum held in 2007, which brought together key stakeholders to Singapore to harness private sector role in addressing housing concerns in the region.

Themes and Tracks
A. Innovations in housing the Urban Poor
This track is practitioner-oriented and focuses on sharing successful, scalable, and sustainable models and cases on urban poverty housing solutions related to Policy, Land Tenure, Technology, Production and Distribution, Finance, Community Participation and Empowerment, and Climate Change.
B. Disaster Response: Rethinking Emergencies
This track deals with the issue of how to effectively address the shelter needs of the urban poor in the context of disaster preparedness and response. Possible topics include:
- linking emergency response with permanent shelter
- innovative disaster response financing
- coordination and protocol in disaster response
- sustainable relief and construction
C. UNESCAP Quick Guides on Housing the Poor
Participants are invited to join a training event on “Quick Guides on Housing the Poor in Asia and the Pacific,” as developed by UNESCAP. The seven guides target: Urbanization, Low-Income Housing, Land, Evictions, Housing Finance, Community-Based Development, and Rental Housing.
D. Leaders of Tomorrow Meet Leaders of Today
Universities from the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere are invited to send student representatives to attend the Forum. This will offer an excellent opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow to meet the leaders of today, through a special platform to study housing issues and to discuss ideas and solutions with forum speakers and housing specialists.

The forum is of intrest to all who ar concerned and engaged in providing urban poverty housing solutions like architects, academics, developers, urban planners, policymakers, NGO's, donor agencies, researchers, private and public sector stakeholders and itnernational organizations.
